Who uses this and why

Online sellers get the most immediate value. Marketplaces want product photos on a clean white or transparent background, and reshooting every item against a studio backdrop is not realistic for most shops. A one-click cutout solves it: drop in the phone photo, remove the cluttered counter behind it, and place the product on pure white before uploading. Beyond selling:

• Profile pictures and team pages — place a person on your brand colour instead of whatever wall was behind them.
• Presentations and posters — float a subject over any layout without an ugly rectangular box around it.
• Sticker packs — WhatsApp stickers require transparent PNGs, which is exactly what this tool exports.
• Signatures — photograph a signature on paper, cut it out, and reuse the clean image on documents (see Signature Resize below).

How on-device AI works

The heavy lifting is done by an ISNet image-segmentation neural network compiled to WebAssembly. On your first click, the browser fetches a compact quantised copy of the model — about 12 MB, shown as the 'Loading AI model' phase of the progress bar. That download happens once; the model is cached afterwards, so every later run starts instantly. During processing, the network scores each pixel as foreground or background, producing a soft mask that keeps fine edges like hair reasonably intact rather than chopping them off with a hard border. The result is returned as a 32-bit RGBA PNG, and the checkerboard pattern behind the preview confirms genuine transparency.

Getting better cutouts

The model is good, but input quality still matters. These habits noticeably improve results:

• Give it contrast — a subject that blends into a same-colour background confuses any segmentation model.
• Use even lighting; strong shadows across the background sometimes survive as grey patches around the outline.
• Straight-on product shots beat angled ones taken over a crowded table.
• In group photos the model keeps the main subjects; crop to a single subject first if that is all you need.
• Very small or blurry images give soft edges simply because there are not enough pixels to work with.

After the cutout

A transparent PNG can be large, especially from a phone camera. If you need it under a size limit, run it through Image Compress next (WebP keeps the transparency while shrinking the file). To put the subject back on a solid colour for a listing, convert to JPG via Image Convert — the transparent area becomes white automatically.
