What makes a good slug

A slug should read like a tiny summary: lowercase, hyphen-separated, and free of clutter. Readable URLs earn more clicks in search results and give visitors (and search engines) immediate context about the page — compare a cryptic '/p?id=8812' against '/guides/sourdough-starter' and the winner is obvious. Aim for roughly three to eight meaningful words — long enough to describe the content, short enough to stay legible when shared. Skip filler words where possible, avoid stuffing keywords, and think twice before baking dates or prices into a slug, since those details age quickly while the URL needs to last for years.

How the conversion works

The generator applies a strict pipeline so results are predictable:

• Accented letters fold to their base form using Unicode decomposition — 'café' becomes 'cafe', 'über' becomes 'uber'.
• Everything lowercases, and punctuation, symbols and emojis are stripped because they are not valid in URL paths.
• Runs of spaces, underscores or hyphens collapse into your chosen separator — hyphen (-) or underscore (_).
• Leading and trailing separators get trimmed, so no slug ever starts or ends with a dangling dash.

Where slugs show up beyond blog posts

Permalinks are the obvious home, but clean slugs pay off everywhere URLs are built by hand: product pages in small e-commerce catalogs, help-centre article paths, campaign landing pages you paste into print flyers, and downloadable file names where a tidy 'q3-sales-report.pdf' beats a mangled upload string. Teams that standardise on one separator and one casing convention ship fewer broken links — generating every slug through the same pipeline is the simplest way to enforce that consistency without policing each publish by eye.

Hyphens, underscores and daily practice

Both separators are supported because different systems prefer different conventions, but hyphens are the standard on the modern web — search engines have long treated hyphens as word separators, whereas underscores visually glue words together in a rendered link. For example, 'My Awesome Blog Post: 2026 Edition!' becomes my-awesome-blog-post-2026-edition. A practical habit: generate the slug, then delete purely structural words ('the', 'and', 'is') manually if you want it tighter — the tool gives you a correct baseline, and trimming from there takes seconds. Watch out for working titles: publishing a draft titled 'FINAL v2 (fixed!!)' auto-generates exactly the slug you would expect, so run it through here first and paste a clean one into your CMS before hitting publish. Keep published slugs stable afterwards; changing a live URL breaks existing links unless you add redirects.
