Why portals reject photos (and how this avoids it)

Application portals validate uploads mechanically: dimensions must match a stated pixel box, and the file must fall between a minimum and maximum size in KB. A photo that fails either check bounces at the final submission step, often after you have filled the entire form. Generic compressors shrink bytes but ignore pixels; generic resizers ignore bytes. This tool was built backwards from the portal validators themselves: exact pixels guaranteed by construction, and a compression engine that searches for the highest JPEG quality that still fits under your ceiling — so the file passes size checks while looking as good as physics allows.

Inside the compression engine

First, anything you load is converted to JPEG if it is not already, because every Indian exam portal demands JPG. Then the image is drawn onto a canvas of your exact target dimensions — Fill mode scales and centre-crops to cover the frame, while Fit-inside mode scales the whole photo to fit and pads the leftover space with white bars. Finally comes the clever part: the engine repeatedly encodes the canvas at trial qualities, binary-searching between 5% and 100% (at most twenty passes) to converge on the highest quality whose file size stays within your maximum. If a minimum KB applies and the result dips below it, the tool says so honestly instead of handing you a file the portal would reject for being suspiciously tiny.

Signature specs for the same exams ship alongside, and a Custom option accepts any width, height and KB range — useful for state PSCs, university admissions, Aadhaar or PAN updates. Where a board's rules shift between sessions (JEE's size band has moved more than once), the interface flags the variance instead of pretending one number is eternal.

Tips for a first-time-pass photo

The engine guarantees size compliance; these points cover everything it deliberately leaves to you:

• Start from a recent plain-background photo taken straight-on; the resizer fixes size, not composition.
• Prefer Fill mode for portrait photos (it crops to fill, keeping faces large); Fit-inside suits documents where nothing may be cropped away.
• iPhone users: shoot in Most Compatible format or convert first — browsers cannot decode HEIC, and the tool will tell you if you try.
• Mind the content rules the tool cannot enforce: SSC wants no caps or dark glasses; UPSC 2024+ wants your name and photo date printed on the image.
